Principality of Sebastian
Principality of Sebastian
The sovereign Principality of Sebastian is an island-nation enclave in North America. With an area of 21 acres it is bordered on all sides by the Waapaahsiiki River. The permanent population and citizenship are currently limited, although the reigning duumvirate have stated they may open Sebastian citizenship to others in the coming years. While English is commonly spoken, there is no official national language. Sebastian's structure, status, and history is similar, in many ways, to that of Monaco and Vatican City. Generations of native peoples used this territory for agriculture.
The Principality of Sebastian declared sovereignty during an historically tumultuous time. Historic social and political unrest coupled with a great plague threatened many people. This sovereign land was discovered while searching for peace, safety, and tranquility. Ancestral members of the royal house gathered at Sebastian and ceremoniously planted the national flag on the western beach. Sebastian Independence Day is celebrated the Saturday closest to October 2nd each year.
Sebastian's claim to sovereignty is enforced and recognized by the Montevideo Convention (specifically Articles 1 & 3). By international law a state must posses: a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to join in relations with other states.
